1908
Founded as a settler relay station on the Uganda–Tanzania route.
1920s
Kitale Museum founded from Lt. Col. Hugh Stoneham’s private collection.
1924
Kitale Club established as an early social hub.
1974
Formally established as a National Museum by the National Museums of Kenya.
2013
Devolution under the 2010 Constitution creates the Kitale Municipal Board.
2025
Launch of the five-year Strategic Plan (2025–2029).

Facts About Kitale
Location, Boundaries & Environment
Location
Kitale is located in Western Kenya, situated between Mount Elgon and the Cherangani Hills, at 1° 0' 56” North, 35° 0' 22” East, with an elevation of around 1,897m. It is 62km from Eldoret, 326km from Nairobi and 766km from Mombasa — about 12km from Mt. Elgon National Park and close to Saiwa Swamp National Park.
Administrative Boundaries
Kitale is the largest urban area and Trans Nzoia County's administrative capital. The Municipality's boundaries cover parts of Saboti Sub County (Tuwan, Kinyoro and Matisi Wards), Kiminini Sub County (Hospital, Sirende and Waitaluk Wards) and Kwanza Sub County (Bidii and Kapomboi Wards).
Environment & Natural Resources
Kitale has ecologically sensitive areas including Section 6 Forest, KCC Forest, Block 10 Forest, the Museum nature trail, the Koitobos and Machinjoni rivers, and wetlands. The municipality has a cool, temperate climate with daytime temperatures between 23.4°C and 28.4°C and nighttime temperatures between 11.0°C and 13.5°C. Extremes reach around 34.2°C in February and 6.5°C in January, with annual rainfall between 1,000mm and 1,700mm.
